The documenta 15 exhibition of contemporary art in Kassel, Germany has been curated by the Indonesian collective ruangrupa. The exhibition’s fantastic installations and artworks showcase a very different view of the world of arts and culture, based on collective agency and interconnected cosmologies.
Sadly, most discussions and critiques hardly engage with these artworks and their creation, but are focused on anti-Semitic depictions, centering on the artwork People’s Justice by the Indonesian collective Taring Padi. Even after its dismantling, the impulse to censor rather than collaborate based on mutual respect has largely prevailed.
