Siemensstadt 2.0
The historical Siemensstadt, a large area in the industrial heartland of Berlin, will be transformed through the Future pact Siemensstadt 2.0 or Siemens City into a modern, urban district of the future. The Siemens AG, together with the Senat of Berlin, is planning to invest €600 million in the largest development project in its history.
This will have multiple impacts, including on public transportation, through the reopening of a former S-Bahn line. The traditional Siemensbahn, built in the 1920s by Siemens & Halske, was closed down and completely abandoned since the East-German railway-strike of 1980 and the subsequent boycott of the S-Bahn in West-Berlin. The station platforms and tracks have been gradually taken over by the surrounding nature.
