Tokyo Toilet
The world’s greatest toilet culture
Toilets are a symbol of Japan's world-renowned hospitality and hygiene culture. In Tokyo’s Shibuya ward, one can now find very special public toilets. Well-known architects from around the world redesigned 17 public toilets in different locations. These facilities are design wonders. Each has a unique identity, including one resembling a spaceship, or another with transparent walls that darken upon closure.
The toilets gained further prominence through the movie Perfect Days by German director Wim Wenders. The film is a sentimental homage to a sanitary worker who cleans the Tokyo Toilet every day.
